RAPID RESTART GIVE YOUTH PLAYERS THE CONFIDENCE TO MAKE QUICK THROWS
When you think of using throw-ins
as a tactical device, it is often the
projectile missiles into the penalty
area that spring to mind.
But sometimes just getting the
ball back into play rapidly can catch
defences off guard and help you
create chances.
This week, we tell you how you
can use the quick throw to your
advantage - and give you some
tips on how to ensure all of your
grassroots youth players are able to
do so confidently.
Part of the effectiveness of the
quick throw relies on team-mates
taking up good positions.
With that in mind, we have a
session in this issue which will help
improve your players' movement
and their ability to find space, so
that they are in the right place to
receive the ball.
We also have a practice which
focuses on lofted passes.
Note the
use of the word 'lofted' - it doesn't
just mean a long or hopeful ball, just
a carefully aimed pass with flight
which can exploit space in behind a
defence, or be used to switch play.
Our Q&A this week is with
Katie Smith, who has high school,
community college and senior
coaching roles.
Katie tells our editor-in-chief
Steph Fairbairn about how her
general philosophy remains the
same in spite of the varied coaching
environments.

Finally, we have an article on the
questions to consider before putting
youth players up an age group.
